The Moral Economy Project was initiated by the Quaker Institute for the Future in 2005, when a group of Quakers gathered at Pendle Hill to try to discern new ways of making the economy fit within the finite boundaries of the ecological sphere. The authors (Geoffrey Garver, Peter G. Brown, Keith Helmuth, Robert Howell and Steve Szeghi) spent the next two and half years writing a book about the concept of a moral economy. A publication agreement was reached with Berrett-Koehler Publishers in San Francisco, and the Moral Economy Project established an office in Montreal in mid-2008. Right Relationship: Building a Whole Earth Economy was published in February 2009 and has already received a great deal of positive response in radio, newspaper and online outlets. The Moral Economy Project is now gearing up for a symposium in Montreal on May 15-16, 2009, to promote dialogue about the ideas in the book.
